Dee hangs out on and near the Oceanside Pier. She normally asks me for money, and I normally decline. But this time I told her about the Portrait program and we had a brief chat. She grew up in the mid west and her family would travel back and forth to California in what sounded like some sort of farming business. She enjoys watching the ocean and depends on hand-outs from people in order to survive. After giving her the she rushed to buy some food at the pier’s snack stand/bait shop.
Being homeless AND female has got to be a tough gig. So goes it for Dee.
Unfortunately many of the homeless people we see on the streets are not simply "bums." Rather, they suffer from unrelenting mental illness. They can’t help it. Schizophrenia, for instance, is treatable. But if you don’t have insurance, and you don’t have anyone looking after you, and you’re out on the street for some reason… good luck.
